“Registering for Wage Protection System (WPS) in the UAE: A Step-by-Step Guide for Employers”

Blackswan Buzz March

The UAE government had introduced the Wages Protection System in 2019 to simplify payments and wage distribution. WPS was designed to ensure that companies meet their obligations to pay their employees promptly and protect them from financial deflection.

 Q.How does the WPS work?

A: Under the WPS, employers are required to register their workforce and regularly update salary information with MOHRE-approved banks. Salaries are then directly transferred to employees’ bank accounts, providing a clear record of payments and ensuring compliance with labor laws.

Q: What is the process for updating employee information in the WPS system?

A: Whenever an employee joins or leaves a company, the employer must download a new employee list and attach it to the application for WPS. This ensures accurate and up-to-date records within the system.

Q: What are the consequences for companies that do not comply with the WPS in the UAE?

A: Companies failing to pay their staff within 10 days of the salary due date or not complying with WPS regulations may face fines. Moreover, they could encounter a block on processing visas for new staff if payments are further delayed.

Q: What penalties do companies with less than 100 employees face for delayed salary payments in the UAE?

A: Failure to pay employee salaries within 60 days of the due date results in severe penalties: no work permits, fines by MOHRE, legal proceedings, and for repeated failures within a year, penalties akin to larger firms. Timely payments are crucial irrespective of company size.
