The Saudi Green Initiative paved the way by stating “Our planet is suffering!” as its tagline!
Why?
In the last 40 years, Saudi Arabia’s temperatures have risen dramatically, resulting in dust storms, pollution and significant rainfall decrease.
Not just Saudi Arabia but the entire middle east is facing extreme temperatures, and KSA facing 50℃ (122°F) in 2021. It’s bad news, which may turn Saudi unlivable!
So, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman took responsibility to turn this rough peninsula into a green beauty!
The “Green Initiative” pacing fast forward along with the “Vision 2030”.
Let’s dig in more about it!

Launched in 2021 by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Green Initiative is a massive project, aiming to turn the country greener with practical initiatives.
Simply, Saudi is now more focused on climate change, reducing pollution, and making the desert bloom. The country is now focusing more on climate sustainable projects to change the overall atmosphere of the Middle East.
Some of these tasks are,
The workings of Green Initiative are already in place, creating a huge impact on Saudi’s existing unbearable desert environment.
When it comes to facing climate challenges, the first initiative is to target carbon emissions! By 2060, they are committing to achieve net-zero emissions through the Circular Carbon Economy approach.
In addition, the kingdom aims to reduce its overall carbon footprint significantly. This strategy not only increases positive environmental impacts but also aligns Saudi Arabia with global efforts to combat climate change.
As the deserts of Saudi Arabia are spreading fast, it’s becoming a warning for nature. However, their powerful Green initiative plan is to plant around 10 Billion trees and restore 40 Million hectares. Wondering how it’s going to help?
Well, the soil will be healthier for cultivation, the air will be cleaner, and more space will be ensured for wildlife. In a nutshell, this project will simply make Saudi Arabia more fertile and livable for future generations.
There is no denying that growing greens isn’t only good for the planet but also great for the economy too! As Saudi Arabia plans to get 50% of its power from renewable energy by 2030, the investment of the Saudi Government will create more job opportunities in different fields.
Apart from that, it will reduce the dependence on oil. In the long run, it helps Saudi Arabia become a leader in sustainability while creating a stronger and greener economy!
Planting trees is not the only way to create a better future. Instead, Saudi Arabia is also working to ensure a safe world for animals and marine life!
As part of the Green Initiative, 30% of the country’s land and sea will be protected. This balances nature, supports tourism, and makes the ecosystem stronger against any environmental changes!
In terms of a sustainable future, this Green initiative is one of the most impactful steps for Saudi Arabia. They have already made environmental care a key part of their development plans! To ensure sustainability in the long run, they are using natural resources wisely.
As part of this plan, 400,000 km² of land and sea are already protected. This smart move helps grow the economy while protecting nature.
Saudi has already planned massive projects for a greater green sustainability for the future generations.
Well, turning the desert into a livable green paradise will require thousands of acres of land repurposed by planting billions of trees. So, Saudi is planting billions of trees to restore 40 million hectares of land.
With this initiative in mind, they will reduce desertification, improve air quality, and increase biodiversity in the future. Moreover, by providing habitats for wildlife, Saudi Arabia is going to preserve 30% of nature for a greater ecosystem.
The days of using fossil fuel and exporting it are slowly decreasing, now Saudi is planning to use renewable sources by 2030. To reduce dependencies, the country is collaborating with global companies like EDF and TotalEnergies to build solar power plants.
It may sound impossible because of extensive oil export but Saudi Arabia wants to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 to fight climate change.
With a green atmosphere, they will fight against pollution and protect natural resources for a more eco-friendly economy.
The farming conditions are not that incredible in the middle eastern peninsula, which is why the Saudi government is investing in eco-friendly farming.
By switching towards organic farming methods, they saw an increased production of nutrient-rich crops, improved soil health, and reduced water consumption.
