The RTA says that shared e-scooter rentals in Dubai doubled to 1 million trips last year.

In Dubai, shared electric scooters made about 1 million trips in 2022, up from 500,000 the year before. No one was killed or seriously hurt in any of these accidents.

The shared e-scooter rental service is doing well because the scooters are becoming the best way for an individual to get around on short trips and the first and last mile of a trip.

In 2022, more than 557,000 people used the service, and 76 percent of them were happy with it, down from 79 percent in 2021.

The RTA’s plans to improve the infrastructure at e-scooter operation zones, which were announced in early 2022, led to the success of the first phase of the shared e-scooter operation.

The RTA set up special lanes for e-scooters with high safety and quality standards. These lines connect places like public transportation stations and entertainment areas like Jumeirah Beach that are popular with tourists and have a lot of traffic.

Once people got riding permits, the RTA also let them ride their e-scooters on safe roads. Since the electronic platform went live at the beginning of April 2022, about 50,000 more permits have been given out.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, Palm Jumeirah, and City Walk were all part of the first phase of building e-scooter tracks.

It also included designated safe roads and tracks in Al Qusais, Al Mankhool, and Al Karama, as well as dedicated tracks for bikes and e-scooters all over Dubai, except for the cycling tracks at Saih Assalam, Al Qudra, and Meydan.

The RTA gave permission for e-scooters to be used in 11 new residential areas in Dubai starting in the first quarter of 2023. This was done after all engineering and technical procedures were finished and traffic safety issues in the new areas were checked.

E-scooters can now be used in 11 new residential areas, bringing the total number of districts where they can be used to 21. This brings the total length of bike paths from 185 km to 390 km, which includes safe, shared roads for bikes and e-scooters all over Dubai.

The RTA turned more than 200 km of Dubai’s internal roads into safe roads with many traffic safety measures, such as lowering the speed limit from 40 km/h to 30 km/h and putting up directional and warning signs to make sure all road users can get around safely.

They also put up traffic signs that show where the safe track for riders of individual mobility begins and ends, changed the speed signs, put up traffic and cautionary signs, and put up direction signs.

Since October 2020, when the trial operation of e-scooters began, the RTA has held a number of education campaigns to make users aware of traffic safety rules, operational areas, and conditions for using e-scooters.
