Licence the activity you actually run
Business Licence Applications in UAE
Your licence lists the activities you are permitted to carry out. Get that list wrong and you are either trading outside it, or paying for approvals you never needed.

The licence has to match the business
Most licence problems are activity problems. A description that sounds right in English maps to an activity code that triggers an external approval, or omits the one thing the company actually sells. We map the activity before applying, not after a rejection.
- Activity codes mapped before submission
- External approvals identified up front
- Direct with every licensing authority
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

Licence types
Which licence covers your activity
The licence type follows the activity, and the activity decides which further approvals apply.
| Licence type | What it covers | Typical activities | Approvals often triggered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial | Buying and selling goods | General trading, import and export, retail, wholesale | Customs registration; product-specific clearances |
| Professional | Services delivered on expertise | Consultancy, IT, marketing, design, engineering | Professional body sign-off where the field is regulated |
| Industrial | Manufacturing, processing, assembly | Factories, packaging, assembly lines | Municipality, civil defence, environmental approvals |
| Tourism | Travel and hospitality | Travel agency, tour operator, hotel services | Tourism authority approval |
| E-commerce | Selling online | Own store, marketplaces, social selling | Payment gateway readiness; delivery arrangements |
Licence categories and their names differ between emirates and free zones. The category and the approvals attached to your activity are confirmed before any application is submitted.
How it works
From activity to licence in hand
The application itself is quick. What determines the timeline is which approvals your activity triggers.
Activity mapping
We translate what the business actually does into the authority's activity codes, flag anything that will need an external approval, and tell you which licence type that lands on. You get a written quote at this point.
Name and initial approval
Trade name reservation and initial approval, submitted with the activity list agreed at step one. Where the activity is regulated, the external approval file is opened in parallel rather than afterwards.
Premises and issue
Tenancy registered so it can be filed, remaining approvals closed out, and the trade licence issued with your activities listed on it.
Before you apply
What the authority will ask for
A licence application is refused far more often for a missing approval than for a missing form.
- Passport copies for shareholders and the manager
- Passport-size photographs, white background
- Three proposed trade names in order of preference
- A plain description of every activity you intend to run
- Shareholding structure and appointed signatory
- Memorandum of association, drafted and notarised
- Tenancy contract and Ejari for the premises
- Qualification certificates where the activity is professional
- Approval from the relevant regulator where the field is licensed
- Parent documents and board resolution for a corporate shareholder
- Attested and legalised documents originating abroad
- Certified Arabic translation where required

Questions
Business Licence Applications in UAE — FAQs
How many activities can go on one licence?
Authorities cap it, and the cap differs between them. Activities also have to be compatible with each other — you usually cannot mix, say, industrial and professional on a single licence. We confirm the limit for your authority before the list is finalised.
What happens if I trade outside my licensed activities?
It exposes the company to penalties and can complicate renewal, banking and visa processing. If the business has moved on from what the licence says, the fix is an amendment, not hoping nobody checks.
Which activities need an external approval?
Anything touching health, education, finance, food, transport, security or media typically does, and the list is longer than most founders expect. We flag these at the activity-mapping stage so they are not discovered mid-application.
Can I change the activities later?
Yes — adding, removing or amending activities is a standard licence amendment. It may change your licence type, your premises requirement or your approvals, so it is worth checking the knock-on effects first.
Do I need the premises before the licence?
For a mainland licence, generally yes: the tenancy has to be registered so it can be filed with the application. Free zones usually bundle a desk or office into the package, which is one reason their timeline is shorter.
How long does a licence take?
Where no external approval is involved, it is normally a matter of days once the documents are in order. A regulated activity runs on the approving body's timetable, which we tell you about before you commit.
