Company Name Reservation in UAE

The trade name is the first filing and the most commonly rejected. The rules are specific, and they are not the same as trademark rules.

A name that passes, and that you can keep

Two different tests matter and they are often confused. The authority decides whether a name may be registered; trademark law decides whether you can stop someone else using it. Passing the first does not give you the second.

  • Three options prepared, not one hopeful submission
  • Naming rules checked before you fall in love with it
  • Trademark implications flagged alongside

What gets refused

Common reasons a trade name is rejected

Nearly every rejection we see falls into one of these.

ReasonWhat it means in practice
Already registeredAn identical or confusingly similar name exists on the register.
Religious or governmental termsNames invoking religion, or implying a connection to government, are not accepted.
Implying a regulated activityWords suggesting banking, insurance or similar are refused unless you hold that licence.
Abbreviations of personal namesPersonal names generally have to appear in full rather than as initials.
Mismatch with the activityA name implying something you are not licensed to do will be queried.
Offensive or public-order termsRefused outright, and the definition is broader than many expect.

Naming rules differ between emirates and free zones and are applied with discretion. We prepare alternatives rather than relying on a single submission.

How it works

Reserving the name

It is fast when prepared properly, and slow when it is a guess.

01

Shortlist and check

You give us the names you want. We check them against the naming rules and the register, and tell you which are likely to pass and why the others will not.

02

Reserve

The preferred name is submitted for reservation with alternatives ready, so a refusal costs hours rather than restarting the process.

03

Carry it through

The reserved name flows into initial approval, the memorandum, the licence and then your bank account and invoices, so it must be right before those are built on it.

Questions

UAE trade name reservation — FAQs

Does reserving a trade name protect my brand?

No. Reservation lets you register the company under that name. Stopping others using it is trademark protection, which is a separate registration and worth doing early.

Can I use my own name?

Generally yes, though personal names usually have to appear in full rather than as initials, and the passport spelling is what counts.

How long is a reservation valid?

Reservations are time-limited and the period differs by authority. We tell you the window when it is granted so the rest of the formation fits inside it.

Can I change the name later?

Yes, but it is a licence amendment with knock-on effects: memorandum, bank account, stamps, invoices and signage all follow the name.

Does the name need to be in Arabic?

There is usually an Arabic rendering of the name on the licence. We handle the transliteration and will check it reads as you intend.
