VAT, excise and the records behind them
VAT & Indirect Tax Compliance in UAE
VAT is transaction-level. It is won or lost in your invoices and records long before the return is prepared.

The return is the easy part
Most VAT problems are invoice problems: tax invoices that do not meet the requirements, input tax claimed without valid support, or supplies treated as zero-rated on assumption. All of it surfaces at review, by which point it is expensive.
- Registration assessed, not applied for by reflex
- Invoices checked against the requirements
- Returns prepared from reconciled records
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What applies
Indirect tax obligations
Which of these apply depends on what you supply, to whom, and where.
| Obligation | Who it affects | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| VAT registration | Businesses meeting the registration conditions | Assess whether you must, may, or should not register, then apply |
| VAT returns | Registered businesses, each period | Prepare and file from reconciled records |
| Tax invoices | Every registered business | Check your invoice format meets the requirements before it is in use |
| Input tax recovery | Registered businesses | Ensure claims are supported and correctly categorised |
| Zero-rated and exempt supplies | Exporters, and certain sectors | Document the basis rather than assuming the treatment |
| Excise tax | Businesses dealing in excisable goods | Assess whether it applies and handle registration where it does |
Registration conditions, rates and treatment are set by the authority and change. Your position is assessed against the current rules and confirmed in writing before filing.
How it works
Getting indirect tax right
The work that prevents a bad review happens at setup, not at filing.
Assess the position
What you supply, to whom and where, and whether that puts you above the registration conditions, below them, or in voluntary territory. You get that in writing.
Register and set up
Registration where it applies, then invoice templates, categories and records set up so returns can actually be produced from the books.
File and support
Returns prepared, reconciled and filed each period, with the supporting records kept in case the treatment is ever questioned.
To assess your position

- Sample sales invoices currently in use
- Sample purchase invoices and expense claims
- Any imports and the customs registration used
- Existing VAT registration certificate, if any
- Prior VAT returns filed
- Any correspondence from the tax authority
- Accounting records or software in use

Questions
UAE VAT and indirect tax — FAQs
Do I have to register for VAT?
Only if you meet the registration conditions, which turn on your turnover and the nature of your supplies. Some businesses may also register voluntarily. We assess it rather than registering you by default.
Should I register voluntarily?
Sometimes — it can let you recover input tax and it looks more established to customers. It also brings filing obligations and penalties for getting them wrong. We set out both sides for your situation.
What makes an invoice a valid tax invoice?
There is a specific set of requirements, and invoices from generic software frequently miss one. We check your template before it is in use rather than after a year of issuing invoices that do not comply.
Are exports zero-rated?
Often, but only where the conditions are met and documented. Treating a supply as zero-rated on assumption, without the evidence to support it, is one of the most common and expensive errors.
What if I should have registered earlier?
Late registration carries penalties, and they accumulate. The position is usually recoverable, and it is far better addressed now than discovered later.
