No trade licence, but permissions apply
Business Licence Applications in the United Kingdom
The UK has no general trade licence. What it has are sector permissions, premises licences and registrations that catch more businesses than people expect.

The absence of a licence is the point
Businesses arriving from the Gulf expect a trade licence listing permitted activities. The UK has nothing of the kind — you incorporate and trade. What does exist is sector-specific: financial services, alcohol, food, waste, childcare, security, and data protection registration.
- Permissions identified for your actual activity
- Local authority and regulator routes explained
- No invented requirements where none exist
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What might apply
Permissions that catch UK businesses
There is no master list that applies to everyone. These are the common ones.
| Permission | When it applies | Granted by |
|---|---|---|
| Financial services authorisation | Lending, payments, insurance, investments | The financial regulator |
| Premises licence | Selling alcohol, late-night refreshment, entertainment | The local authority |
| Food business registration | Preparing or selling food | The local authority |
| Data protection registration | Most businesses processing personal data | The data protection regulator |
| Sector-specific licences | Waste, security, childcare, transport, gambling | The relevant regulator |
| Planning permission | Changing how premises are used | The local planning authority |
UK permissions are sector and local-authority specific and change. Which apply to your activity and premises is confirmed before you start trading.
How it works
Establishing what you actually need
Often the honest answer is “nothing beyond incorporation”.
Assess the activity
What you will actually do, from where, and whether it touches a regulated field. For many businesses the answer is that no permission is required.
Identify and apply
Where a permission does apply, we identify the right regulator or local authority and prepare the application.
Registrations
Data protection registration where it applies, and any ongoing conditions put on your compliance calendar.
- A plain description of what you will do
- Whether you handle client money
- Whether you sell alcohol or prepare food
- Whether you process personal data
- Where you will operate from
- Whether premises use is changing
- Whether you employ or supply workers
- Whether you handle waste or hazardous materials
- Whether you work with children or vulnerable people
- Whether you provide transport or storage
- Any regulator contact already made
- Equivalent permissions held in other countries

Questions
UK business permissions — FAQs
Do I need a licence to trade in the UK?
For most businesses, no. There is no general trade licence. You incorporate, register with HMRC and begin. Permissions are sector-specific.
Why does this feel too easy?
Because the UK front-loads almost nothing and back-loads the obligations into filing, tax and employment compliance. The absence of a licence is not an absence of regulation.
What about data protection?
Most businesses processing personal data must register with the data protection regulator and comply with UK data protection law. It is one of the most commonly missed requirements.
Who grants a premises licence?
The local authority for the area. Alcohol, late-night refreshment and entertainment are the usual triggers, and processes differ between councils.
What if my activity is regulated?
Then authorisation comes before trading, and in financial services that is a substantial process in its own right. We will tell you plainly if that is where you are.
