Codes that carry no permission
Selecting Your Business Activities in the United Kingdom
A UK SIC code grants you nothing and restricts you nothing. It still affects how you are treated.

Not a licence, but not meaningless
Unlike licensing jurisdictions where your registered activity is your permission to trade, UK SIC codes are purely statistical. You are not restricted to them, and they confer no authorisation. But banks read them during onboarding, credit reference agencies use them to score you, insurers price from them, and an obviously wrong code invites questions. Choosing carelessly costs you later in ways that are hard to trace back.
- Codes chosen for how they will be read, not just for accuracy
- Real permissions identified separately from the codes
- Codes reviewed when the business actually changes
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What codes actually affect
SIC codes and where real permission comes from
Two different things, often confused.
| Question | Position |
|---|---|
| Do codes authorise the activity? | No. They are statistical only. |
| Am I restricted to them? | No. You may trade outside them. |
| Where does permission come from? | Sector regulators, where the activity is regulated. |
| Do banks read them? | Yes, during onboarding and review. |
| Do credit agencies use them? | Yes, in scoring and risk assessment. |
| Can I change them? | Yes, on the confirmation statement. |
The SIC classification list is maintained for statistical purposes and is revised periodically. Regulatory permissions are entirely separate and are set by the relevant sector regulator.
How it works
Getting the classification right
Codes and permissions handled separately.
Describe the business
What you actually do and earn revenue from, in enough detail to classify it sensibly.
Choose codes that read well
Codes that are accurate and that a bank, insurer or credit agency will recognise as consistent with your business.
Identify real permissions
Separately, whether anything you do is regulated and which regulator that engages.
- What the business actually does
- Where your revenue comes from, by activity
- Whether anything you do is regulated
- Whether you handle client money
- Whether you process personal data
- Whether you will seek bank finance
- Whether you need trade insurance
- Whether you sell to consumers or businesses
- Whether you import or export
- Planned activities for the next two years
- Any activity you have been refused a service for
- Existing codes if the company is already formed

Questions
UK SIC codes and activities — FAQs
Does my SIC code limit what I can trade?
No. It is statistical and confers neither permission nor restriction. That surprises people coming from licensing jurisdictions.
Then why does it matter?
Because banks, insurers and credit reference agencies read it. A code inconsistent with your actual business creates friction you will struggle to attribute to the code.
How many codes can I have?
You can record more than one, up to the limit Companies House allows. Recording your main revenue activities is better than one vague entry.
Where do real permissions come from?
From the relevant sector regulator — financial services, care, security, gambling and others each have their own. We identify which applies.
Can I change codes later?
Yes, through the confirmation statement. It is worth reviewing them when the business genuinely changes.
