One filing, the whole Union
Trademark Registration in Cyprus
Because Cyprus is an EU member state, one European trade mark protects you here and across the Union.

The national filing is often unnecessary
For most businesses trading in Europe the efficient route is a single European Union trade mark, which takes effect in Cyprus and in every other member state from one application. A Cyprus national registration is narrower and is worth filing only in specific circumstances — for example where you trade solely here, or where an EU application faces an obstacle in another state. Choosing between them is the first conversation, not a formality.
- EU and national routes compared on where you actually trade
- Classes scoped for your real product range
- Obstacles in other member states identified before filing

Choose the route
Protecting a brand in Cyprus
The EU route usually wins.
| Route | What it covers | When it suits |
|---|---|---|
| EU trade mark | Cyprus and every member state | Trading anywhere in the Union |
| Cyprus national mark | Cyprus only | Trading only here, or an EU obstacle exists |
| International application | Designated countries, EU or national | A portfolio beyond Europe |
| Both EU and national | Belt and braces | Rarely necessary |
| Multiple classes | Each class of goods or services | Most businesses need more than one |
| Greek-language mark | As used | Where you market in Greek |
Classification, examination, publication and opposition procedures are set by the registries and change. An EU trade mark can be blocked by an earlier right in any single member state, which affects the route choice. Cyprus is a European Union member state, so EU directives, the single market and free movement rules all apply.
How it works
From clearance to registration
Search the whole Union, not just Cyprus.
Clear and choose
Searches run across the EU register as well as Cyprus, since an earlier right in any member state can block an EU application.
File the right route
EU application where you trade across the Union, or a national filing where that is genuinely the better fit.
Prosecute to registration
Examination answered, publication monitored and the opposition window seen through to certificate.
- The mark exactly as used
- Logo artwork to specification
- Greek version of the mark if used
- Full list of goods and services
- Goods or services planned within the year
- Member states where you trade or will trade
- Applicant details
- Priority documents if claiming an earlier filing
- Registrations held elsewhere
- Any earlier right you are aware of
- Any objection raised against the mark
- Markets outside the EU where protection is wanted

Questions
Cyprus trademark registration — FAQs
Do I need a Cyprus national trademark?
Often not. A single EU trade mark covers Cyprus and every other member state, and for most businesses that is the efficient route.
When is a national filing better?
Where you trade only in Cyprus, or where an earlier right in another member state would block an EU application. The search tells us which.
Can one earlier right block my EU application?
Yes. An earlier right in any single member state can be raised against an EU application, which is why the search covers the whole Union.
How does this differ from the United Kingdom?
The United Kingdom left the Union, so an EU mark no longer covers it. Cyprus remains covered, which simplifies European protection considerably.
Should I register the Greek form of the mark?
If you market in Greek, it is worth considering, since the two forms function differently in the market.
