Company Name Reservation in Mauritius

Mauritius reserves names through the Registrar before incorporation. Restricted words are the usual stumbling block.

GCC business setup specialists

Approval, not just availability

The Registrar checks more than whether a name is taken. Names implying regulated activity, government connection or a scale the company does not have attract refusal, and some require consent that is rarely forthcoming.

  • Options prepared, not one hopeful submission
  • Restricted words identified before filing

What gets refused

Common reasons a name is rejected

Most refusals fall into one of these.

ReasonWhat it means in practice
Already registeredAn identical or confusingly similar name exists.
Restricted wordsTerms implying banking, insurance or similar need consent.
Implies government connectionRefused without authority.
Misleading as to activityQueried where it does not match the stated business.
Offensive or undesirableRefused outright.
Infringes existing rightsCan be challenged later by a rights holder.

Name rules are applied by the Registrar with discretion and change. We prepare alternatives rather than relying on one submission. A Global Business Company must be administered by a management company licensed by the Financial Services Commission, and an Authorised Company must have a licensed registered agent. That is a statutory requirement in Mauritius. We co-ordinate your engagement with a licensed Mauritian management company and manage the process end to end; the regulated filings are made by them.

Questions

Mauritius company names — FAQs

Does name reservation protect my brand?

No. It lets you incorporate under that name. Protecting the brand is trademark registration with the Industrial Property Office, which is separate.

Which words are restricted?

Terms implying banking, insurance, fund management or government connection generally require consent, which is not readily given.

How long is a reservation valid?

Reservations are time-limited, and incorporation should proceed within the window. We tell you the period when it is granted.

Can a name be challenged later?

Yes, particularly by a trademark holder. A name check is not a trademark clearance search.

Can I change the name later?

Yes, by resolution and filing, with consequences for your licence, bank account and contracts.
