Trade Name Reservation in Qatar
Qatar trade names are reserved with the Ministry. Arabic form and restricted words cause most refusals.

Arabic matters more than people expect
A trade name has to work in Arabic as well as English, and transliteration is assessed rather than assumed. Names implying state connection, regulated activity or a scale the company lacks are refused, and some require consents that are rarely granted. Prepared alternatives save a week.
- Three options prepared, not one hopeful submission
- Arabic form and transliteration checked
- Trademark implications flagged alongside
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What gets refused
Common reasons a name is rejected
Most refusals fall into one of these.
| Reason | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Already registered | An identical or confusingly similar name exists. |
| Arabic form unacceptable | Transliteration or meaning is queried. |
| Implies state connection | Refused without authority. |
| Restricted words | Terms implying regulated activity need consent. |
| Inconsistent with the activity | Queried where it does not match. |
| Offensive or undesirable | Refused outright. |
Name rules are applied by the Ministry with discretion and change. Alternatives are prepared rather than relying on one submission.

Questions
Qatar trade names — FAQs
Does name reservation protect my brand?
No. It lets you register the company. Brand protection is trademark registration with the Ministry’s trademarks office, which is separate.
Does the name need to be in Arabic?
The Arabic form matters and is assessed. Transliteration is not automatically accepted, so we check it before filing.
Which words are restricted?
Terms implying state connection or regulated activity generally require consent, which is not readily given.
How long is a reservation valid?
Reservations are time-limited and registration should follow within the window. We tell you the period when it is granted.
Can I change the name later?
Yes, by amendment, with consequences for the licence, signage, bank account and contracts.
