The decision behind the licence
Selecting Your Business Activities in UAE
Your activity list is the most consequential thing on your licence. It sets your licence type, your approvals, your premises and often your visa quota.

Pick the activity, and everything else follows
Founders describe their business in their own words; the authority recognises a fixed list of coded activities. The translation between the two is where setups go wrong — usually by picking something adjacent that quietly triggers an approval nobody budgeted for.
- Your business translated into the authority’s codes
- Approval triggers flagged before you apply
- Future activities considered, not just today’s
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

How the choice bites
What your activity selection decides
This is why the activity is settled before anything else is filed.
| It decides | How |
|---|---|
| Licence type | Commercial, professional, industrial or tourism follows directly from the activity. |
| External approvals | Regulated fields need sign-off from the relevant body before the licence is issued. |
| Premises | Some activities require specific premises — a warehouse, a clinic, a kitchen — not just an address. |
| Visa quota | Quota is influenced by activity as well as by the space you hold. |
| Jurisdiction options | Not every free zone offers every activity, which narrows where you can be licensed. |
| Banking | Some activities make account opening materially harder, which is worth knowing before you file. |
Activity lists, codes and the approvals attached to them differ by authority and are updated over time. Your activity is checked against the current list before any application.
How it works
From what you do to what the licence says
Half an hour here routinely saves weeks later.
Describe the business
In plain words: what you sell, to whom, how you deliver it, and what you might add in the next two years. We ask about the next two years deliberately.
Map to codes
We translate that into the authority’s activity codes, show you the options where more than one fits, and flag every approval each would trigger.
Confirm and file
You confirm the final list, we check it is available in your chosen jurisdiction, and it goes onto the application exactly as agreed.
To get this right
What we will ask you
Vague answers here are the single biggest cause of a licence that does not fit the business.
- What exactly you sell, in plain words
- Whether you sell goods, services or both
- Who your customers are and where they are
- Whether you hold stock, and where
- Whether anything is manufactured or assembled
- Whether you need a physical customer-facing space
- Any professional qualifications the field requires
- Whether the field is regulated in other countries you know
- What you expect to add in the next two years
- Whether you will import or export
- How many people you expect to sponsor
- Any activity you have already been refused elsewhere

Questions
Choosing UAE business activities — FAQs
How many activities can I put on one licence?
Authorities cap it and the cap varies. Activities also have to be compatible — you generally cannot mix industrial and professional on one licence. We confirm the limit for your authority before finalising.
Should I add activities I might need later?
Sometimes. Adding a compatible activity now is usually cheaper than amending later, but an activity that triggers an approval or a premises requirement will cost you immediately. We separate the two.
What if my business does not match any listed activity?
It almost always maps to something, occasionally to a combination. Where genuinely novel, the authority may need to be approached directly, which we will tell you before you commit.
Can I change activities after the licence is issued?
Yes, by amendment. It may change your licence type, premises or approvals, so the knock-on effects are worth checking first.
Does the activity affect my visa quota?
It can, alongside the premises you hold. Where headcount matters to you, we check quota implications before the activity list is fixed.
