Licence, customs code, clearance
Import / Export Business Setup in UAE
Trading goods needs more than a licence. Customs registration, product approvals and the right jurisdiction all decide whether shipments clear or sit.

The licence is step one of three
Companies get a trading licence, then discover at the port that they have no customs code, or that their goods need an approval they have never heard of. Both are predictable, and both are cheaper to handle before the first shipment than during it.
- Customs registration set up alongside the licence
- Product approvals identified before you ship
- Jurisdiction matched to how your goods actually move
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What trading needs
Beyond the trade licence
Which of these apply depends on your goods and how they move.
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Trading licence | The activity must cover the goods you actually trade, not something adjacent. |
| Customs registration | A customs code tied to your licence is needed to clear goods in your own name. |
| Product approvals | Food, cosmetics, electronics, medical and many other categories need clearance before import. |
| Jurisdiction choice | Free zone warehousing suits re-export; mainland suits selling into the local market. |
| Documentation | Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and transport documents, consistent with each other. |
| Storage | Where goods sit, and whether the premises are approved for that category. |
Customs procedures, duty treatment and product approvals depend on the goods and the emirate, and they change. Your requirements are confirmed before the first shipment.
How it works
Getting trade-ready
The aim is that your first shipment is routine rather than educational.
Goods and route
What you are moving, where from, where to, and whether it is for re-export or local sale. That decides the jurisdiction and flags the approvals your category needs.
Licence and customs code
Trading licence with the right activities, then customs registration so you can clear goods in your own name rather than through someone else’s.
Approvals and first shipment
Product approvals obtained where the category requires them, documentation set up consistently, and the first shipment supported through clearance.
Before you ship

Questions
UAE import and export — FAQs
Do I need a customs code?
To clear goods in your own name, yes. It is tied to your trade licence and is a separate registration, which is why it is set up alongside the licence rather than discovered at the port.
Free zone or mainland for trading?
Free zone suits importing and re-exporting, often with duty advantages and warehousing in the zone. Mainland suits selling into the local market directly. Many businesses need both, through a branch or a distributor.
Which goods need approvals?
Food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electronics, telecoms equipment and several other categories typically do. We check your specific product list rather than generalising.
Can I sell free zone stock into the UAE market?
Not directly as a free zone company. It generally requires a mainland distributor or a branch, and the duty position changes. It is the single most common surprise for new traders.
What usually holds a shipment?
Documents that do not match each other — a description on the invoice that differs from the packing list, or an HS code that does not fit the goods. Consistency matters more than volume of paperwork.
