Investor & Employee Immigration in Hong Kong

Visas are separate from the company

Investor & Employee Immigration in Hong Kong

Incorporating in Hong Kong gives you no right to live or work there. The visa is an entirely separate application.

Company ownership is not a visa

Founders frequently assume that owning a Hong Kong company entitles them to reside. It does not. Employment and investment visas are assessed on their own criteria, including whether the role could be filled locally.

  • Visa route assessed before you rely on it
  • Sponsorship requirements explained honestly
  • No promises about discretionary outcomes

How it fits together

Routes and what they assess

Each route has its own criteria and none follows automatically from incorporation.

RouteBroadly forWhat is assessed
Employment sponsorshipStaff employed by a Hong Kong companyRole, qualifications and whether it could be filled locally
Investment routeFounders establishing a businessBusiness plan, contribution and viability
Talent schemesIndividuals meeting published criteriaQualifications, earnings or achievement

Visitor statusShort visitsNo right to work
Permanent residencyAfter continuous ordinary residenceA long-term question, not a setup one

Immigration routes, criteria and processing are set by the Immigration Department, are discretionary and change. Nothing here is a guarantee of outcome.

We assess before you build plans around a visa.

01

Your circumstances against the published criteria, with an honest view of the prospects rather than an encouraging one.

02

03

Submit and follow through

Application submitted and queries answered, with realistic expectations on timing.

Questions

Hong Kong immigration — FAQs

Does owning a Hong Kong company give me residency?

No. Company ownership and immigration are entirely separate. Incorporating confers no right to live or work in Hong Kong.

Can my company sponsor me?

Potentially, through an employment or investment route, but it is assessed on its own merits including whether the role could be filled locally.

Can I work on a visitor visa?

No. Visitor status carries no right to work, and doing so is a serious matter.

How long does an application take?

It runs on the Immigration Department’s timetable and is discretionary. We give a realistic range rather than a promise.

What about talent schemes?

Hong Kong operates schemes for individuals meeting published criteria. Whether you qualify is assessed against those criteria rather than assumed.
