Register before you appoint anyone
Trademark & Brand Registration in Qatar
The classic Gulf mistake is appointing a local distributor before registering the brand. Qatar is where it bites.

Sequence protects you
Brand owners entering Qatar frequently appoint a distributor or agent first and think about trademarks later. By then the mark may be registered in someone else’s name, or tied up in an agency arrangement that is difficult to exit. Registering the mark in your own name before any commercial appointment is the single cheapest piece of protection available to a brand entering this market.
- Filed in your name before any distributor is appointed
- Agency and brand control considered together
- Arabic and Latin forms both addressed
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

What to settle before appointing a distributor
Each of these is harder to fix afterwards.
| Step | Why it comes first |
|---|---|
| Register the mark in your name | So ownership is never in question. |
| Register the Arabic form | It functions as a separate mark in practice. |
| Cover the right classes | Gaps are what others file into. |
| Document any licence to use | Distinguish use from ownership. |
| Understand the agency position | Appointments can be difficult to unwind. |
| Plan the exit | Before you need it. |
Trademark procedures and the rules governing commercial agency arrangements are set by the authorities and change, and agency matters warrant specific legal advice. We flag the interaction rather than advising on agency law.
How it works
Securing the brand first
Register, then appoint.
Clear and file
Register searched, classes scoped, and the mark filed in your own name in both the forms you use.
Document the relationship
Any permitted use by a local partner documented as a licence, so use is never mistaken for ownership.
Then appoint
The commercial appointment made from a position where you hold the registered right, not after.
- The mark exactly as used
- Logo artwork to specification
- Arabic version of the mark
- Full list of goods and services
- Goods or services planned within the year
- Applicant details — filed in your name, not a partner’s
- Power of attorney, legalised
- Priority documents if claiming an earlier filing
- Registrations held in other countries
- Whether a distributor has already been appointed
- Whether anyone else has used the mark here
- Target Gulf markets beyond Qatar

Questions
Qatar trademark registration — FAQs
Why register before appointing a distributor?
Because once a local party is in place, the mark may be filed in their name or entangled with the commercial arrangement, and recovering it is slow and expensive.
What if a distributor has already registered my mark?
It becomes a dispute rather than an application. We tell you the realistic position rather than filing hopefully, and recommend specialist legal advice.
Should I register the Arabic form?
Yes. In practice the Arabic and Latin forms function as separate marks, and leaving one unregistered leaves a gap.
Does a Qatar registration cover the Gulf?
No. Each state requires its own filing. We advise on which markets justify it.
Can my distributor use the mark?
Yes, under a documented licence. Documenting it is what keeps use from being confused with ownership.
