Retention is the mechanism
Corporate Income Tax & Compliance in Kuwait
Kuwait taxes the foreign-owned share of profits, and collects it by holding back part of every contract payment.

The retention is what makes this urgent
Kuwaiti corporate income tax attaches to profits attributable to foreign ownership, with Kuwaiti and GCC-owned entities treated differently. What distinguishes Kuwait operationally is the retention: contract payers hold back a portion of each payment until the payee produces a tax clearance. For a foreign contractor that turns tax compliance into a working capital issue, not just a filing one.
- Retention exposure quantified before you sign contracts
- Filings and clearance pursued so retained cash is released
- Ownership-linked charge modelled against your structure

Questions
Kuwait corporate income tax — FAQs
Who pays corporate income tax in Kuwait?
Broadly, the charge attaches to profits attributable to foreign ownership. Kuwaiti and GCC-owned entities are treated differently and face separate levies instead.
What is the contract retention?
A portion of each contract payment held back by the payer until the payee produces a tax clearance. It is a cash-flow issue as much as a tax one.
How do I get the retained money released?
By bringing filings up to date, settling the tax position and obtaining clearance. Until then the cash stays with your customer.
Is there VAT in Kuwait?
Kuwait has not implemented VAT, though it has been discussed regionally for years. We confirm the position in force when you engage.
Do subcontractors affect my position?
They can. Payments to subcontractors and non-residents carry their own consequences, and we address them alongside your own filings.
