Company Setup Timeline & Process in the United States

A US company can exist today. Getting its tax number takes longer, and getting it banked longer still.

Three stages on three different clocks

The formation filing is often same-day. The federal tax identification number is quick for applicants with a US social security number and considerably slower for those without, because the application has to go through a slower channel. Banking is the longest and least certain stage of all. Quoting only the first number is how foreign founders end up with a company they cannot use.

  • All three stages dated separately and honestly
  • The slower tax number route handled properly for non-residents
  • Banking expectations set before you start, not after

Stage by stage

Where the time goes

Each stage is a different order of magnitude.

StageTypical driver
Name check and filingState processing; often same day.
Governing documentsHow quickly terms are agreed.
Tax identification numberMuch slower without a US social security number.
Foreign qualificationEach additional state’s processing.
BankingThe longest and least certain stage.
Sales tax registrationsOnly where nexus exists.

State processing times, tax identification number processing for foreign applicants and bank onboarding are outside anyone’s control and change. We give realistic ranges for each stage.

How we run it

Three stages, started together

Nothing waits unnecessarily.

01

File and start the tax number

The entity formed and the tax identification application submitted immediately, because for non-residents it is the first real wait.

02

Paper and register

Governing documents completed, foreign qualification filed where needed and registered agents appointed.

03

Bank and operate

Banking pursued through routes that actually onboard your profile, with bookkeeping and filing calendars set up meanwhile.

To keep it moving

What compresses the timeline

The tax number and the bank file are the levers.

Questions

US setup timeline — FAQs

How fast can a US company be formed?

Often the same day, depending on the state. That part is genuinely quick.

Why does the tax identification number take longer for me?

Because applicants without a US social security number cannot use the fastest channel and must apply through a slower route. It is the first real wait.

Can I open a bank account while waiting?

No. The tax identification number comes first, and banking follows. That sequence is fixed.

What is the longest stage?

Banking, by a wide margin, and it is also the least certain. We set expectations about it before you commit to anything.

Can I trade before banking is resolved?

The company can contract, but you need a way to be paid. We address banking in parallel rather than treating it as a final step.
