Business Registrations & Licences in India

India has no single business licence. It has state registrations, municipal licences and sector approvals, separately.

GCC business setup specialists

Every state you operate in is a new set

Beyond the company registration itself, operating premises require registration under the state shops and establishments legislation, a trade licence from the municipal corporation, and professional tax registration in states that levy it. Each state has its own statute, forms and renewal cycle. A company with offices in three states therefore holds three sets of registrations, and the pattern repeats for every new location.

  • Every state and municipal registration identified for your footprint
  • Sector approvals separated from general registrations
  • Renewal cycles tracked per state, not centrally

How it works

Mapping your registrations

Locations first, then filings.

01

Map the footprint

Every state and city where you will have premises or staff, since each drives its own registrations.

02

Register at each layer

Central tax registrations, state tax and labour registrations, and municipal licences for each premises.

03

Maintain

Renewal dates tracked per state and city, and new registrations added as you open locations.

To map this

What we need to know

Questions

India business licensing — FAQs

Is there a single business licence in India?

No. Registrations are spread across central, state and municipal levels, and the state and municipal layers repeat for every location.

What is shops and establishments registration?

Registration of your premises under state legislation governing working conditions. It is required per premises and the statute differs by state.

Do I need registrations in states where staff work remotely?

It can arise depending on the state and the arrangement. It is worth checking rather than assuming remote staff create no footprint.

What is professional tax?

A state-level levy on employment, deducted and remitted by the employer in the states that impose it. Not every state does.

How often do these renew?

On different cycles by state and city. We track each separately because a single central calendar does not work here.
