Two headcounts, two cost bases
Payroll & HR Administration in Bahrain
Bahraini payroll costs depend on nationality. Budgeting a single per-head figure is how plans go wrong here.

Nationality changes the employer cost
Social insurance contributions are set at materially different rates for Bahraini nationals and expatriate employees, and each expatriate worker also carries a recurring monthly work permit charge from the labour authority. There is no income tax to withhold, so the entire employer cost sits in contributions, permit fees and indemnity — and it varies by who you hire.
- Employer cost modelled separately for each nationality
- Monthly permit charges included in the run rate
- Wage payment handled through the required channel

What runs monthly
Payroll obligations in Bahrain
Nationality is the key variable.
| Item | Applies to | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax withholding | No personal income tax | — |
| Social insurance — Bahrainis | Employer and employee, at the national rate | Monthly |
| Social insurance — expatriates | At a different, lower basis | Monthly |
| Work permit fee | Per expatriate worker | Monthly |
| Wage payment | Through the required electronic channel | Monthly |
| Leaving indemnity | Accrues with service | Provision, paid on exit |
Contribution rates, permit charges and wage payment requirements are set by the authorities and revised. Yours are applied as currently in force.

Questions
Bahrain payroll — FAQs
Is there payroll tax in Bahrain?
There is no personal income tax. The employer cost sits in social insurance contributions, the monthly work permit charge for expatriate staff and accrued indemnity.
Why does nationality change the cost?
Social insurance applies at a materially different rate and basis for Bahraini nationals than for expatriate employees, so your blended cost depends on the mix you hire.
What is the monthly work permit charge?
A recurring per-worker charge payable to the labour authority for each expatriate employee. It is an ongoing cost, not a one-off at visa issue.
How must wages be paid?
Through the required electronic channel so payments are recorded. Paying outside it creates a compliance exposure.
Should indemnity be accrued monthly?
Yes. It accrues with service whether or not you provide for it, and discovering it at a resignation is a cash-flow problem.
