His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik has signed a Royal Decree that gives 157 expats in the country the right to become citizens.

It’s not the first time Oman’s Sultan has given citizenship to people who have lived there before. In December of last year, he gave 32 expats their passports.

Foreigners who want to become citizens of Oman and get an Omani visa will have to pay OMR 600 for an application, while the spouses or ex-spouses of Omani citizens will have to pay OMR 300. This information comes from the Ministry of the Interior.

Applicants will have to show that they live and work in Oman and have never been in trouble with the law. They will also have to show a medical document that says they don’t have any diseases that can be spread, or they might not be able to get citizenship.

Documents Required

The ministry’s executive rule 92/2019 says, “An application for Omani citizenship will cost OMR 600.” An application for the expat wife, widow, or divorcee of an Omani citizen will cost OMR 300, as will an application for the citizenship of an Omani woman’s underage child.”

The law says that it will cost OMR 200 to apply to give up or get back Omani citizenship.

Foreigners who want to become citizens of Oman must meet a number of requirements and bring 12 papers with them when they apply. “The foreigner must show the following documents when applying for citizenship,” says the law. A copy of the passport with a valid visa; a copy of the personal identification card or another form of identification; a copy of a legal residency card; a copy of the marriage certificate if he is married; and copies of his wife’s passport and any children’s passports. If he is married to an Omani woman, he must show a copy of his certificate for marriage of a foreigner, a certificate of good conduct from Oman and another from the country he comes from, a valid medical certificate showing that he is healthy and free of diseases that can be passed on, proof of income from his employer, a certificate from the embassy of his country saying that he is allowed to give up his original passport, and written proof of his intention to give up his current passport.

Long-term resident

Anyone who becomes an Omani citizen must go to the office to get an Omani passport and live in Oman for a long time.

Article 16 of the law says, “Anyone who becomes an Omani citizen must go to the ministry within six months to finish the paperwork for an Omani passport for himself and his minor children, who will automatically get one.”

When this process starts, expats will have to take an Arabic language test. The test can be written or it can be an interview in Arabic at the ministry. If an expat fails the test, they can take it again after six months, but they have four chances to do so.

If they don’t get a pass from the Ministry of Interior, new citizens of Oman won’t be able to spend more than six months outside of the country at once in the ten years after they get their citizenship.
