Customs, permits and restrictions
Import, Export & Trading Licence in Qatar
Qatar imports heavily and clears through a single customs window. Restricted goods need planning, not improvising.

Restrictions are stricter than neighbours
Qatar maintains firm restrictions on certain goods, and some categories that move freely elsewhere in the region do not here. Add standards conformity requirements and the permits that specific goods need, and classification work before the first shipment pays for itself.
- Classification and permits checked before the first shipment
- Restricted goods identified honestly up front
- Free zone and mainland routes compared
Mainland, free zone and offshore jurisdictions we file in — so the recommendation is based on your activity, not on which authority we happen to be registered with.

Trading options in Qatar
Where goods go decides the structure.
| Route | What it suits | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland trading company | Import for the Qatari market | GCC tariff and local distribution |
| Free zone entity | Logistics, re-export and processing | Zone framework and customs treatment |
| Commercial agency | Representing an overseas principal | Agency rules and registration |
| Branch | Project-linked supply | Often contract-specific |
| Transhipment | Goods passing through | Customs procedure driven |
| Restricted goods | Specific categories | Permits, or not permitted at all |
Tariff rates, import permits, standards requirements and prohibited and restricted lists are set by the authorities and change. Your goods are checked against current rules.

Questions
Qatar import and export — FAQs
Is customs clearance centralised?
Clearance runs through the customs authority’s electronic system, which is efficient once your registrations and classifications are correct.
What duty applies?
The GCC common tariff applies, with classification determining the rate and some goods exempt or subject to higher rates.
Are some goods restricted in Qatar?
Yes, and the restrictions are firmer than in some neighbouring states. We identify anything affected before you commit to stock.
Do I need standards certification?
Certain goods require conformity to Qatari standards before clearance. It is better established before shipping than at the port.
Should I use a free zone?
For logistics, re-export and processing it can suit well. For local distribution a mainland entity is usually right. We compare both.
